If you encounter way more traffic than usual on your way to lunch on Aug. 21, you have a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event to blame. On Aug. 21, the Kansas City metropolitan area falls smack dab in the middle of the path of the total solar eclipse. Hundreds of thousands of spectators from all around the world are expected to flock to St. Joseph, Missouri, where the path of totality hits the longest.
However, if you can’t make it out to St. Joe to take in the full eclipse, don’t start worrying yet. Downtown KC will experience a 99.9% eclipse, and Johnson County will see a 99.4% eclipse. You can celebrate the 2017 solar eclipse all over the metro area! Check out these viewing parties in your neighborhood:
- Johnson County Parks: Antioch Park in Merriam, Theatre in the Park in Shawnee and Heritage Park in Olathe are hosting “Total Eclipse in the Parks.” Bring your own blanket or lawn chair and treat yourself to a food truck lunch before watching the eclipse.
- CommunityAmerica Ballpark: Head out to CommunityAmerica Ballmark, the KCKhome stadium for the Kansas City T-Bones, for their Solar Eclipse Viewing Party. The first 200 guests will receive complimentary tickets to that night’s home game!
- North of the River: Make your way to the Comfort Field Parking Lot on the Park University Parkville campus to take in the otherworldly view. And if you’re interested in learning more about the science behind the 2017 solar eclipse, you can also hear from a retired NASA Educational Programs Officer on campus on Aug. 20.
- City Market: Head to City Market for a full day of solar eclipse fun, including yoga, a karaoke dance party, a beer and wine garden and an aerial acrobatics troupe.
And if you want to glimpse the best view in the world and head out to St. Joe? Check the St. Joe Convention & Visitors Bureau site for details on all the celestial celebrations!
So, grab your special eclipse-viewing glasses (sunglasses will not do the trick) and head outside starting at 1:08 pm on Aug. 21! We won’t see another total solar eclipse in KC until 2205.
